Elementary School serves a unique community where the school facilities
act as the emergency medical, social functions, disaster refuge,
and education centers for the few residents of a remote desert
environment. Ninety-five percent of the students attending the
school are children of migrant workers serving produce growers
along the Gila River.
Consequently, the superintendent of the school requested a design that allowed high security for students and
strict control of public access to academic areas. SSPW Architects developed a solution where the K-8 classrooms
are organized into a courtyard. The public can only enter the courtyard through the administration office or media
center. Students can freely move about in the courtyard from classroom to classroom under the observation of the
school staff and administration.
